Summer Mowing Heights

Raise your mower. Taller grass shades the soil, reduces evaporation, and keeps roots 10–15°F cooler than scalped turf.

The one-third rule: Never remove more than one-third of the blade length in a single mowing. If your St. Augustine is 6 inches tall and your target is 4 inches, take it to 4.5 first, then mow again in 3–4 days. Scalping exposes soil to direct sun and can kill turf that was otherwise surviving.

Watering Strategy

Under Conservation Stage restrictions, automatic irrigation gets one day per week. Make it count.

How to water on your one day

  1. Run each zone twice: Once in the early morning (5–6 a.m.) and once in the evening (7–8 p.m.). This delivers approximately 1 inch total
  2. Cycle and soak: Run each zone for 10–12 minutes, wait 30–60 minutes for absorption, then run again. This prevents runoff on clay soil
  3. Target 6–8 inches of penetration: Push a screwdriver into the soil after watering. It should slide in easily to 6 inches. If it stops at 2 inches, your run time is too short
  4. Check soil before watering: If the soil is still moist 3 inches down, skip the cycle and let the zone rest

  1. Run each zone manually and walk the yard. Look for broken heads, misaligned nozzles, and dry spots
  2. Check for runoff: If water is flowing onto the sidewalk or street, reduce run time and add a cycle-and-soak delay
  3. Replace worn nozzles: Spray heads lose coverage as nozzles wear. Replace any head that sprays a mist instead of distinct streams
  4. Inspect drip zones: Clear clogged emitters, check for line damage from landscaping or animals
  5. Verify controller schedule: Make sure your controller runs on the correct day and during allowed hours
  6. Install a rain sensor: Prevents the system from running during and after rainfall
