In Austin’s climate, gravel has a specific advantage: it requires zero water, no mowing, and no seasonal replacement. Unlike organic mulch, gravel does not decompose, blow away in wind, or harbor termites. It simply sits there and does its job, year after year.
Here are gravel landscaping ideas that treat gravel as a design material rather than a filler — each idea uses a specific gravel type for a specific purpose, contained by proper steel edging and integrated with the surrounding hardscape and planting.

Idea 1: The DG Patio

Why it works: A DG patio costs 40–60% less than a full paver patio while providing a warm, natural surface that drains instantly and stays cool underfoot. The concrete pads prevent chair legs from sinking into the DG and provide a stable surface for heavy furniture. Idea 2: The Gravel Garden
A xeriscape planting area where gravel replaces organic mulch as the ground cover between plants.
- Gravel: DG or crushed granite (⅛–⅜ inch) in a natural tone that matches the soil color
- Depth: 2–3 inches over woven landscape fabric
- Plants: Drought-tolerant natives planted through cuts in the fabric — agave, red yucca, autumn sage, blackfoot daisy, Mexican feathergrass

Why it works: Gravel mulch does not decompose, does not blow away, does not harbor termites, and does not need annual replenishment. It reflects heat away from the soil surface (important for drought-tolerant plants that rot in moisture) and allows rainwater to permeate to the root zone. The mineral ground plane also mimics the natural habitat of desert and Hill Country plants, making them look at home rather than transplanted.
Idea 3: The Dry Creek Bed
A river rock channel that follows the natural drainage path across your yard, managing stormwater while creating a visual feature.
- Channel: 18–36 inches wide, 6–8 inches deep, following the natural low point of the yard
- Rock: Mix of river rock sizes (2–6 inch) in the channel, with larger boulders (8–18 inch) placed at the edges and at turns
- Banks: Smaller river rock (1–2 inch) or DG transitioning from the channel edge to the surrounding planting
- Planting: Moisture-tolerant plants at the channel edges — Gulf muhly, inland sea oats, turk’s cap — and drought-tolerant plants on the higher banks
- Function: During rain, the creek bed captures and slows stormwater, directing it across the property and reducing erosion. Between rains, it reads as a sculptural landscape element
Why it works: Austin’s clay soil and heavy rainfall create serious drainage challenges. A dry creek bed solves the drainage problem while adding a design feature that works in both wet and dry conditions. It is far more attractive than a French drain or PVC pipe, and it adds visual variety (river rock, boulders, moisture plants) that straight-line hardscape lacks.
Idea 4: The Floating Step Path
Large concrete or stone stepping pads set in a gravel field to create a walkway between spaces.
- Pads: 24×24 inch or 24×48 inch concrete pavers, 3–4 inches thick, set flush with the gravel surface
- Spacing: 2–4 inches between pads, filled with the surrounding gravel
- Gravel: DG or pea gravel extending 12–24 inches on both sides of the path for a generous ground plane
- Edge: Steel edging along both sides of the gravel strip
- Planting: Low grasses or ground cover (silver ponyfoot, creeping thyme) along the edges of the gravel strip to soften the transition to lawn or planting beds
Why it works: Floating steps are one of the most modern path treatments. The visible gravel between and around the pads creates a lightness and openness that a solid path does not have. The path is inherently permeable (water drains through the gravel gaps), and the steel edging keeps the gravel contained while providing a clean geometric boundary.
Idea 5: The Gravel Courtyard
A walled or fenced entry courtyard surfaced entirely in gravel, with steel planters, a specimen tree, and lighting.
- Surface: 3 inches of compacted DG (for walking stability) or pea gravel (for a softer texture) over fabric
- Features: One steel planter with a large agave, 2–3 smaller steel planters with ornamental grasses, and a single specimen tree (desert willow, vitex, or Texas mountain laurel) planted directly in the ground through a cut in the fabric
- Lighting: Uplights on the tree and planters, FCOB under the planter edges
- Walls: Existing fence or wall defines the space. The gravel surface fills the entire area without any hardscape patio — the gravel IS the floor
Why it works: A gravel courtyard has a Japanese or Mediterranean quality — minimal, clean, and calm. The uniform ground plane focuses attention on the sculptural elements (planters, tree, lighting) rather than competing with patterned hardscape. The cost is significantly lower than a paver or concrete courtyard, and the result is equally intentional when the edges are clean and the materials are consistent.
Idea 6: The Gravel + Steel Grid

- Grid: Steel edging creating a 4×4 foot or 6×6 foot grid pattern across the front yard
- Squares: Alternating between DG fill and planted squares (one agave per planted square, or a mass of a single ground cover species)
- Path: The DG squares create the walking path while the planted squares provide the landscape. The pattern is functional and decorative simultaneously
- Scale: A 30×30 foot front yard = approximately 25–35 squares, giving you 12–18 planted squares and 12–18 gravel squares
Why it works: The grid pattern is the most architecturally bold xeriscape treatment. It replaces the randomness of a traditional garden with a precise, repeating geometry that reads as designed from the street. The steel edging provides the structure, and the alternating gravel and plants provide the texture. Zero irrigation, zero mowing, maximum curb appeal.
Installation Fundamentals
Landscape fabric
Always install woven geotextile fabric under gravel. Not the thin non-woven fabric from the hardware store — it tears, degrades in UV, and fails within 2–3 years. Commercial-grade woven fabric blocks weeds, allows water drainage, and lasts 15–20 years. Overlap seams 6–8 inches and pin with landscape staples every 24 inches.
Steel edging
Every gravel area needs steel edging. Without it, gravel migrates into lawn, planting beds, and pavement. Steel edging is staked every 24 inches and provides a permanent, precise boundary between gravel and everything else. This is the single detail that separates a designed gravel landscape from a pile of rocks.
Depth
Install gravel at 2–3 inches for ground cover and paths, 3–4 inches for patios and high-traffic areas. Too shallow and the gravel thins out, exposing fabric. Too deep and the surface becomes unstable for walking (especially round gravels like pea gravel).
Compaction
Angular gravels (DG, crushed limestone, crushed granite) should be compacted with a plate compactor after spreading to create a firm walking surface. Round gravels (pea gravel, river rock) do not compact and remain loose — this is fine for ground cover but makes them a poor choice for primary walkways and patios where stability matters.
