L-shape

The most popular layout for Austin backyards. One leg holds the grill and cooking zone (6–8 feet), the perpendicular leg holds the prep and beverage zone (4–6 feet). The L naturally separates hot cooking from cold prep, creates a work triangle, and defines the kitchen zone without walls. The inside corner becomes dead space unless you place a sink or turn the counter at 45 degrees.

U-shape

Maximum counter and storage. Three sides surround the cook, with dedicated zones: grill wall, prep wall, and beverage/serving wall. Requires at least 12 feet of width and 8 feet of depth to avoid feeling cramped. The cook is enclosed, which is efficient for serious cooking but can feel isolating during parties. Add bar stools on the outside of one wall to keep the cook connected to guests.

Freestanding island

A standalone kitchen in the center of the patio, accessible from all sides. The cook faces the yard and guests instead of a wall. One side is the work surface (grill, prep), the opposite side is a raised bar with stools for seating. A monolithic poured concrete countertop with waterfall edges that run from the top surface down to the ground on both ends.

Why it works: The waterfall edge eliminates visible base material and makes the counter look like a single sculpted mass. Combined with under-counter lighting, the island appears to hover. This is the most modern look and pairs well with large-format paver patios and steel edging.

Idea 3: The Cook’s L with Pizza Oven

An L-shaped kitchen designed for someone who actually cooks — with a wood-fired pizza oven as the centerpiece.

Why it works: A pizza oven is the single appliance that generates the most use and the most conversation. It cooks pizza in 90 seconds, roasts vegetables, bakes bread, and becomes the visual focal point of the kitchen. The L-shape separates the oven heat from the grill heat and gives the cook two independent cooking stations.

Idea 4: The Bar Kitchen

Essential Components

Gas line

A dedicated natural gas line from your meter to the kitchen eliminates propane tank swaps and provides unlimited fuel. Natural gas runs at lower pressure than propane, so confirm your grill is rated for natural gas or has a conversion kit. A licensed plumber runs the line — budget $500–$1,500 depending on distance from the meter.

Electrical

At minimum, you need one GFCI-protected 20-amp circuit for the refrigerator and a second circuit for lighting and outlets.
