Idea 1: The Steel Pergola

Steel provides the structural strength for clear spans (no mid-span posts cluttering the space), handles Austin’s wind loads without oversized members, and matches our edging and planter material language. We use IPE or cedar for ceiling elements where the warmth of wood is needed overhead.
Structural Requirements
Footings
Every shade structure needs concrete footings. In Austin’s expansive clay, footings should be 18–24 inches in diameter and 24–30 inches deep minimum, poured below the moisture-change zone where clay stops swelling. Under-sized footings are the most common failure point — the structure tilts as the clay moves seasonally.
Engineering
Austin requires structural engineering for any shade structure that needs a permit (most structures over 120 square feet or 10 feet tall). The engineer sizes the columns, beams, connections, and footings to handle dead load (the structure itself), live load (rain, people leaning on it), and wind load (Austin design wind speed is 90–100 mph for basic wind speed). Do not skip engineering to save money — an un-engineered structure in a storm is a liability.
Drainage
Solid-roof structures must direct water to gutters and downspouts, then to a drain line that moves water away from the patio and foundation. A 14×20-foot roof sheds approximately 175 gallons of water in a 1-inch rainstorm. Without gutters, that water dumps directly onto the patio edge, undermines the paver base, and creates puddles.
Lighting Under Shade Structures
A shade structure is the natural mounting point for outdoor lighting. Options by structure type:
- Flat-roof pavilion: Recessed can lights in the ceiling (4–6 fixtures for a 12×16 space), pendant fixtures over a dining table, FCOB strips under the roof edge for a perimeter glow
- Steel pergola: FCOB strips along the underside of beams, or pendant fixtures hung from the slats. Wrap-around string lights are inexpensive but look temporary — use them for events, not permanent installation
- Shade sail: Uplighting on the support posts, or ground-level fixtures washing light up onto the underside of the fabric for a lantern effect
Run all lighting wiring inside the steel posts and beams (conduit welded into the structure) to keep wires invisible. Surface-mounted conduit and exposed wires degrade the look of any shade structure.
