Fabrication Details That Matter

Drainage

Every steel planter needs drainage holes — at least four ½-inch holes per square foot of bottom surface. Without drainage, roots sit in water, soil becomes anaerobic, and plants die. Drill or punch holes before the patina forms so the edges rust to match.

Weld quality

All seams should be fully welded (continuous bead), not tack-welded or riveted. Tack welds fail under soil pressure. Full welds create a watertight box that holds soil without leaking at the corners. Grind the exterior welds smooth for a clean finish, or leave them visible for an industrial aesthetic.

Internal stiffeners

Any planter longer than 48 inches or taller than 24 inches needs internal angle-iron stiffeners welded across the short dimension to prevent the long walls from bowing outward under wet soil pressure. One stiffener per 48 inches of length is the minimum.

Soil contact

Steel in direct contact with constantly wet soil will corrode faster at the soil line. A gravel layer in the bottom 2–3 inches of the planter promotes drainage and keeps the wettest soil away from the base. For maximum longevity, line the interior with landscape fabric before adding soil — this slows direct contact corrosion without impeding drainage through the bottom holes.
