Deck Construction

Elevated Outdoor Living

A deck is the foundation of outdoor living in Austin. It defines the space, creates elevation changes that make small yards feel larger, and provides a clean, level surface for furniture, grills, and entertaining. Red Agave builds custom decks using three material families, each selected to handle Central Texas conditions: Dekorators composite decking, Western red cedar, and Brazilian IPE hardwood. The right choice depends on your budget, how much maintenance you want to do, and the aesthetic you are after.

Dekorators composite boards are our most popular option for Austin builds. They resist UV fading, do not splinter, and never need staining or sealing. The Voyage line offers realistic wood grain textures in colors that pair well with the Hill Country palette. Cedar is the classic choice. It is naturally resistant to rot and insects, lighter than hardwoods, and takes stain beautifully. It does require re-staining every 2 to 3 years to maintain its color in the Austin sun. IPE is the premium tier. This Brazilian hardwood is so dense it sinks in water, resists rot, insects, and fire, and lasts 50 years or more with minimal maintenance. We source FSC-certified IPE and can leave it to silver naturally or oil it annually to maintain its deep brown tone.

Every deck we build includes steel post brackets set in concrete footings, proper joist spacing for the decking material, and hidden fastener systems for a clean surface with no visible screw heads. We integrate pergolas, privacy walls, built-in bench seating, and FCOB under-rail lighting as part of the structure. Most custom deck projects in Austin range from $15,000 to $55,000. Common Questions

Deck FAQ

Composite or wood — which is better for Austin?
For most Austin homeowners, composite is the better long-term value. It handles UV exposure, heat, and moisture without fading, warping, or requiring annual staining. Dekorators composite boards stay cool enough to walk on barefoot even in July. Cedar is the right choice if you prefer a natural wood aesthetic and do not mind re-staining every 2 to 3 years. IPE is the premium choice for clients who want a 50-year deck with unmatched hardness and grain character.
How much does a custom deck cost in Austin?
Most custom deck projects in Austin range from $15,000 to $55,000 depending on size, material, and features. A standard 300 sq ft composite deck with stairs and railing runs $18,000 to $28,000. Adding a pergola, privacy walls, and integrated lighting increases the project to $35,000 to $55,000. We provide detailed proposals during your free on-site consultation.
Do I need a permit for a deck in Austin?
Yes. The City of Austin requires a building permit for any deck over 200 square feet or any deck more than 30 inches above grade. Most residential decks require a permit. We handle the full permitting process including structural plans, site plans, and inspections as part of our design-build service.
