It is an engineering decision with real consequences for comfort, longevity, and maintenance.
Surface Temperature: The Barefoot Test
In a city where summer stretches from May through October and afternoon temperatures hit 100°F or higher for 40+ days, surface temperature is arguably the single most important performance metric for any patio or pool deck material.

Why travertine stays cooler
Three properties make travertine the coolest stone option:
- Porosity: Travertine’s natural voids and micro-pores allow moisture to evaporate from within the stone, creating an evaporative cooling effect similar to how sweat cools skin. Denser stones like granite trap heat because they lack these internal pathways
- Reflectivity: Light-colored travertine (ivory, silver, noce) reflects significantly more solar radiation than dark materials. Albedo matters enormously — a 10% increase in reflectivity can reduce surface temperature by 15–20°F
- Thermal conductivity: Travertine’s calcium carbonate composition conducts heat more slowly than silica-based stones, meaning the surface dissipates heat to your foot more gradually, making brief contact more tolerable even at similar measured temperatures
For pool decks specifically, travertine is the industry gold standard. The combination of low surface temperature, excellent wet-traction from the tumbled texture, and visual elegance makes it the default choice for luxury pool projects.

Strengths: Coolest surface temperature, excellent wet traction (tumbled), timeless Mediterranean aesthetic, available in precisely dimensioned pavers for clean geometric patterns, consistent color and thickness.
Weaknesses: Requires sealing every 2–3 years, susceptible to acid staining (citrus, wine, pool chemicals if splashed), softer than granite/quartzite (will show wear in extremely high-traffic commercial applications), premium price.

Strengths: Organic, one-of-a-kind aesthetic that blends with natural landscapes, exceptional durability and hardness (especially quartzite and bluestone), excellent wet traction from natural cleft texture, lower maintenance than travertine (often doesn’t require sealing), blends seamlessly with Hill Country architecture.

Installation Methods and Austin’s Soil Challenge
All three materials can be installed on either a compacted aggregate base (dry-set) or a reinforced concrete slab (mortar-set). The choice depends on the application, the soil conditions, and the desired aesthetic. In Central Texas, the soil almost always dictates the method.
Dry-set (sand-set) installation
Excavate 8–10 inches below finished grade. Compact native soil to 95% density. If expansive clay is present, over-excavate 4–6 additional inches and backfill with non-expansive road base (flex base or crushed limestone).
Install 6 inches of compacted road base (Type II limestone) in 2-inch lifts, compacting each lift with a plate compactor. Final surface tolerance: ±1/8 inch over 10 feet.
Screed 1 inch of coarse concrete sand (ASTM C33) over compacted base. For travertine and pavers, sand provides final leveling. For flagstone, adjust sand depth per stone thickness.
Set material on bedding sand. Compact pavers with plate compactor and rubber pad. Sweep polymeric sand into joints (pavers and travertine) or pack with decomposed granite or pea gravel (flagstone).
Best for: Concrete pavers (the standard method), travertine pavers, dry-laid flagstone walkways and patios. Allows individual movement over expansive soils without cracking.
Mortar-set installation
Pour a 4–5 inch concrete slab with #4 rebar on 18-inch centers, both directions, on properly prepared subgrade. Include control joints every 8–10 feet. Allow minimum 7-day cure before stone installation.
Apply ¾–1 inch of modified thin-set or Type S mortar bed. Back-butter each stone for full mortar coverage. For flagstone on clay soils, use lime-modified mortar for flexibility.
Fill joints with sanded grout (travertine, tight joints) or mortar (flagstone, wide joints). Tool joints for a clean finish. Strike flush or slightly recessed depending on design intent.
Best for: Formal flagstone patios, travertine over existing concrete, outdoor kitchens and fire pit areas where level surfaces are critical. More rigid — slab must be engineered for Austin’s expansive clay.

Mixing Materials: The Luxury Approach
The most sophisticated landscapes do not commit to a single material. They use each stone where it performs best, creating visual variety and functional zones. A common Red Agave palette:
- Pool deck and main patio: Ivory tumbled travertine — cool, elegant, barefoot-friendly
- Walkways and secondary paths: Oklahoma blue-gray flagstone dry-set in decomposed granite — organic, textured, blends with xeriscape plantings
- Driveway: Charcoal concrete pavers in herringbone — structural, cost-effective, handles vehicle weight
- Transitions: Custom 1/4-inch steel edging between each material zone — crisp lines, natural rust patina
The key is limiting the palette to two or three complementary materials maximum. More than that reads busy. Choose stones with complementary undertones — cool grays together, warm buffs and creams together — and let the steel edging frame each zone.

Flagstone offers the best long-term value: moderate upfront cost, minimal maintenance, and virtually indestructible longevity. Travertine costs more to maintain but delivers unmatched thermal comfort and luxury aesthetic. Pavers are the most affordable upfront but show their age sooner.
