Limestone looks beautiful the day it goes in. The warm cream and tan tones feel like they belong in Central Texas. The texture is natural. The color variation is subtle and organic. Every homeowner who chooses it falls in love with it on install day.
Then a year passes. The barbecue grease drip that nobody wiped up is now a permanent dark shadow. The edge of the pool coping has chipped where the kids dropped the cooler. The north-facing stones have turned green with algae that no amount of pressure washing fully removes. The sealer has worn off in the high-traffic path from the back door to the grill.
Limestone is porous. That single fact drives every maintenance problem, every stain, every chip, and every frustrated phone call we get from homeowners who chose it without understanding what they were signing up for.
What Porous Actually Means
Limestone is a sedimentary rock formed from compressed marine organisms over millions of years. Unlike granite or concrete, its internal structure is full of microscopic voids — tiny pockets and channels that absorb liquid like a sponge.

Those absorption numbers tell the whole story. Standard limestone can absorb 5–12% of its weight in water. That same absorption applies to olive oil, red wine, rust-tinted irrigation water, tree sap, and pool chemicals. Once a liquid penetrates below the surface, it is permanent. No pressure washer, no poultice, no chemical cleaner will pull it back out.
The Three Problems with Unsealed Limestone
1. Staining
The most common stains on Austin limestone patios:
- Cooking grease and oil: Dark, spreading marks that deepen over time. A single drip from a brisket tray creates a stain visible from 20 feet. Oil wicks outward through the pore structure, so the stain grows wider for days after the initial spill
- Rust: From metal furniture legs, steel planters, or iron-rich irrigation water. Rust stains are orange-brown and nearly impossible to remove once absorbed
- Organic matter: Fallen leaves, berries, and flower petals leave tannin stains — dark outlines of the leaf or berry that persist for years. Pecan trees and live oaks are the worst offenders
- Hard water and minerals: Austin’s water is heavily mineralized (300–400 ppm). Sprinkler overspray deposits white calcium and mineral rings that etch into limestone’s already-calcium-based surface
- Algae and mildew: North-facing stones and shaded areas develop green and black biological growth that penetrates the pores. Pressure washing removes the surface layer but the spores remain in the pore network and regrow within weeks
Concrete is not stain-proof. But a properly finished concrete surface — whether broom finish, troweled, or stamped — is dense enough that most spills sit on top long enough to be wiped clean. The absorption window is minutes, not seconds.
2. Chipping and spalling
Limestone has a Mohs hardness of 3. For reference, a copper penny is 3.5. Concrete rates 6–7 on the same scale — more than twice as hard.
This matters in three ways:
- Edge chipping: Limestone pavers chip on their corners and edges from normal use — dragging furniture, dropping a grill lid, rolling a cooler across a joint. Concrete pavers resist the same impacts without damage
- Freeze-thaw spalling: Austin averages 15–25 freeze events per winter. Water absorbed into limestone expands 9% when it freezes, popping off flakes and layers from the surface. Each freeze cycle does cumulative damage. After 5–10 winters, unsealed limestone develops a rough, pitted surface texture that traps more water, accelerating the cycle
- Surface wear: High-traffic paths develop visible wear patterns in limestone within 3–5 years. The soft surface erodes under foot traffic, especially with grit tracked from decomposed granite areas. Concrete wears at a fraction of the rate
Limestone comes in 2×4 foot slabs, which means each individual stone covers significant area. When one chips or spalls, the damaged section is visually prominent. Replacing a single 2×4 slab in a mortared installation requires cutting out the stone, chiseling the mortar bed, and re-setting a new piece — a repair that costs $200–$400 per stone.
3. Ongoing sealing costs
The only way to protect limestone from staining and reduce freeze-thaw damage is to seal it. And sealing is not a one-time event.

For a 400-square-foot patio, sealing costs $600–$1,200 every 1–2 years. Over 10 years, that is $4,000–$8,000 in sealing alone — on top of the original installation cost. South-facing and full-sun areas degrade the sealer faster because UV breaks down the protective layer. Pool decks need the most frequent resealing because chlorine and salt accelerate sealer breakdown.
Miss a sealing cycle and the first oil spill or hard freeze creates damage that no amount of resealing will undo.
The Case for Concrete
Concrete is not exotic. It does not have the natural warmth of quarried stone. But for Austin conditions, it outperforms limestone on every practical measure.

The 10-year cost comparison accounts for installation plus sealing cycles plus average repairs. Limestone costs 2.5–3 times more than concrete over a decade, and that gap widens every year the sealing schedule continues.
What Concrete Can Do That Limestone Cannot
Stamped concrete
Stamped concrete with a limestone pattern and integral color captures 80% of limestone’s visual warmth at half the cost. The texture is pressed into the wet concrete surface, and the color is mixed into the batch — not painted on top. A well-executed stamp is difficult to distinguish from natural stone at conversational distance. The stamp does repeat on a pattern, which trained eyes will notice on large areas, but most homeowners and guests never do.
Board-formed concrete
Board-formed concrete uses rough-sawn lumber as the form, leaving a wood-grain texture imprinted in the surface. The result is a warm, natural aesthetic that does not attempt to imitate stone at all — it creates its own material identity. Board-form pairs particularly well with poured concrete fire pits and outdoor kitchen counters.
Exposed aggregate
The concrete surface is washed to reveal the natural stone aggregate below. Using local limestone or river rock as the aggregate gives the surface a natural, textured appearance while maintaining concrete’s density and durability. Excellent for pool decks because the rough texture provides slip resistance.
Acid staining
Chemical stains react with the minerals in concrete to produce translucent, variegated color that looks organic — not painted. Earth tones (tan, amber, terra cotta, walnut) mimic the color range of natural stone while maintaining concrete’s impermeability.
When Limestone Is the Right Choice
Limestone is not a bad material. It is a high-maintenance material. There are situations where it is the right call:
- Covered patios and porches: Under a pergola or pavilion, limestone is shielded from rain, freeze-thaw, and direct UV. Sealer lasts 2–3 times longer. Stain risk drops because there is no irrigation overspray and less organic debris
- Dry-stack accent walls and borders: Limestone as a vertical decorative element rather than a walking surface avoids the wear, staining, and spalling issues. Chop-block limestone edging is one of the most cost-effective natural stone applications at $15–$21 per linear foot depending on height and whether it is cemented
- Pool coping (with commitment): Limestone stays cooler underfoot than concrete in direct sun — a real advantage at 105°F. But pool coping takes the heaviest chemical and water exposure of any application. It must be sealed on schedule without exception. Lueders limestone is the best-performing option here because of its tighter grain and lower absorption rate
- Design-driven projects where maintenance is budgeted: If the aesthetic is the priority and the homeowner understands and budgets for the ongoing sealing commitment, limestone can be the right choice. The key is informed consent, not surprise
Lueders: The Best Limestone for Central Texas
Lueders limestone is quarried in Jones County, Texas — about 180 miles northwest of Austin. It is significantly denser than most imported limestone varieties, with a tighter grain structure and lower absorption rate (3–6% vs 5–12% for standard limestone).
Lueders is our preferred natural stone when a project calls for real limestone. It is more resistant to staining and spalling than other varieties, and it has a warm buff/cream color that pairs naturally with Austin’s native landscape. Set in a mortar bed, Lueders runs approximately $270 per ton installed. Set dry on a compacted base, it is less expensive but more prone to shifting.
Even Lueders requires sealing. It is better limestone, not a different material.
Our Recommendation
For most Austin patios, walkways, and outdoor living surfaces, concrete — poured or paver — is the better investment. It costs less upfront, costs dramatically less over time, resists staining and chipping without sealer, and handles Austin’s freeze-thaw cycles without damage.
